Vatican is reviewing movies on behalf of whom ?

Vatican through its official newspaper "L'Osservatore Romano" called Avatar "bland", "Unoriginal", etc...

what is the meaning of the review ?

I have come across this definition :

1913 Webster :
2. To go over and examine critically or deliberately.
Specifically:
(b) To go over with critical examination, in order to discover excellences or defects; hence, to write a critical notice of; as, to review a new novel.

I think the vatican is literally implementing the meaning in white and black. "To go over with critical examination, in order to discover excellences or defects", vatican people has completely ignored the word "excellences" deliberately.

why did they write the review ?

Writing film reviews always involves money and the money is paid by the producer or distribution company of the film. They make sure that readers read a good and acceptable review rather than a blunt review of the film. But most importantly, the reviewer has a chance to view the film.

In the above circumstances, there are many doubts in my mind :

[1] Did vatican employed persons to watch each and every film released throughout the world ?
If they employed somebody, does this amount to moral policing ?

[2] Upon whose insistence vatican has resorted to write the review ? Or somebody paid Vatican to write the review ?

[3] Is the Vatican trying to increase declining popularity ?

I never thought Vatican would interfere like this. It's better for Vatican to stick to its religious agenda rather than running amok on everything. Religion and Religious institutions should not develop clout on politicians and society at large.

In the present age and circumstances, religious bodies and their members should divert their resources both financial and wisdom towards brotherhood and pacify the religion extremism.

Avatar is a film about humans living in harmony with nature. It deals with the issue about another human beings race on the brink of collapse.

The End.

Indian Hockey player’s are not paid ?

My attention has turned towards hockey while I was going through online news.
I am shocked by the news about non-payment of salaries to the Indian players. For God sake, Hockey is India's national game. It is so insulting for Indians about their hockey player's begging/striking for their salaries by boycotting Balevadi (Pune) national camp on Friday. This clearly show the apathy of the Government and Hockey Federation Officials towards the game and it's player's. Indian Hockey Federation and Government has plummeted to new low.

I want to do some research about Indian hockey. Guess what, indian Hockey Federation website is under construction, LINK. And the last update is on March 18th, 2009 : LINK & LINK 2. Pretty outdated website.

some excerpts from the Global Criminal Compliance Handbook, March 2008of Microsoft

These are the some excerpts from the Global Criminal Compliance Handbook, March 2008.

Targeting specific people or group of people or a country is very easy for US.

NON-US LAW ENFORCEMENT
"as all Microsoft Online Services customer data is stored in the US"

These are the online servies provided by the Microsoft according to the document :

Microsoft Online Services :
e-mail services.
authentication service : windows live id.
instant messanging services : windows live spaces & msn groups.
custom domains : windows live admin center & office live small business.
online file storage : office live workspace & windows live skydrive.
gaming : xbox live.

This is the most information because it effects our daily life in one or another way. If possible make a note or save this information. It is very useful.

Microsoft retains e-mail accounts registration records for the life of the account.

For free msn hotmail and free windows live hotmail accounts, the e-mail content is typically deleted after 60 days of inactivity.

This has really surprised me. Paying for the e-mail seems to be the best option.

Stored e-mail records for msn premium customers :

Be aware that users may also store e-mail content on their computer's hard drive. Microsoft will not be able to disclose e-mail content stored on a user's computer - only e-mail content stored on Microsoft's e-mail servers.

I have always thought that all my chat history is recorded by the Microsoft. The law enforcement authoritites should work overtime if they are going to rely on instant messanging :

Windows Live Messenger program is downloaded onto client :

Microsoft servers authenticates users, but Microsoft does not log the content of communications between users.

Persons who comment unnecessarily and post hate messgaes should think twice before doing so. It is somewhat creepy that they maintain record of all things. I was under impression that they retain only text.

Windows Live Spaces :
Only the owner of a Windows Live Space can upload content, and when they do so, the IP address and date and time is also captured. In addition, if someone posts a comment on the blog, Microsoft captures the text of the comments as well as the IP address, date adn time of upload and nickname. These transactional records are retained for 90 days.

This is about the expiration of transaction records of MSN groups :

MSN groups : When a manager or member of an MSN Group uploads content, Microsoft captures the IP address and date and time of content upload. These transactions records are retained for 60 days.

The onus is clearly on the law enforcement authorities and if any country follows all the guidelines given by the Microsoft, the law breaker has no opportunity to escape :

Law enforcement should know to send their criminal legal process to Microsoft if a domain name lookup indicates association with Microsoft.

This will provide some respite to the Xbox owners :

XBOX LIVE :

General subscriber information is unverified. Detailed credit card verification has been implemented.

If your investigation involves a stolen Xbox console, if the console serial number or Xbox LIVE user gamertag is provided and the console has been connected to the Internet, IP connection records may be available.

microsoft free e-mail account age out timeline

Today I have come to know that Microsoft Spy Guide has leaked online through Cryptome, thank you cryptome.

Microsoft named the spy guide as Global Criminal Compliance Handbook. It contains info various information about the various policies and procedures followed by Microsoft to co-operate with the Governments.

Most of use free e-mail accounts. And there are number of people who are still using microsoft e-mail services.

The table down below shows free e-mail account age out timeline :

Account Creation

User must sign in within te first 10 days to keep account active.
Account will become inactive after 30 days of inactivity. No e-mail content is deleted but the account will not receive e-mail. If account owner does not sign in after 120 days of inactivity, all e-mail is deleted and the account becomes a Windows Live ID only account. If the associated WLID is not used for 365 days from the first day of inactivity period, then the associated WLID is deleted. After 365 days of inactivity, the account name is recycled and is available for creation by another customer.
Abbrevation : WLID : Windows Live ID.

Please bookmark this page or grab a copy of the handbook from cryptome website.

key issues raised by rann movie …..

Do we need to use helmet while driving two-wheeler ?
Through out the movie, Purab Shastri [ Ritesh Deshmukh ] [ main lead in the movie ] wears a helmet while driving his two-wheeler. This brings to the focus point about the accident deaths related to non-wearing of helmets and the stance of various state governments.

WHO released "Global status report on road safety" in 2009 and it has portrayed a bleak future and implementation of safety measures. Estimated National Helmet Wearing Rate is left blank in WHO report. It is blank because there is no scientific data available or it might be some kind of understanding between Indian Government and WHO.

71 % of vehicles in India are 2 wheelers. All the states has made wearing of helmet mandatory. Every now and then High Courts and Supreme Court express their dissatisfaction about the non-enforcement of law.

The Indian Government does not spend much on awareness. It also does not use Doordarshan extensively to increase awareness. What Indian population needs is awareness and implementation of various laws but not new laws which are "paper tigers".

As a citizen irrespective of nationality where do I stand ? is the question which has to be raised within ourselves rather than blaming Governments and non-implementations of law.

Cola and some other companies does not renew the advertising contracts on the basis of TRP's ?

Vijay Malik (Amitabh Bachchan) controlled India 24/7 channel is almost bankrupt due to non-renewal of advertising contracts based on TRP's. His income is not in proportion to the expenses. Assuming he supports through his personal wealth, how long can he succeed to prevent the channel from bankruptcy ?

The above point raises 2 question to my mind ?

[1] How TRP's are caluclated in India ?

TRP services are provided by TAM, aMap and BRUC. TAM has monopoly over ratings. The other two are relatively new in the game. I have sent an e-mail to the organisation to know more details. BRUC is the newer industry body founded in march,2008.

There are only two rating providers are working in India, TAM & aMap. They are not providing data using same methodology. From consumer point of view they are two separate ratings and we cannot compare them. This analogy leads to the conclusion that TAM is monopolistic.

The television channels have no option but to continue the services provided by TAM. They might be using aMap services for internal purposes only rather than for commercial purpose.

[2] Under which law, television channel should register and conduct themselves ?

World-wide most of the television channels are public limited companies. In India, some channels are private and some are public. The composition of the board of directors irrespective of the firm registration plays an important role.

To run a television channel requires money. And Indian Government until today did not give support through budget to bring down the cost of hardware. In this age, television channels cannot ignore the value of latest technology [ software & hardware ] and human capital.

If the channel is privately held, then the decisions are usually made by the chairman or the person who has invested the money. This gives a room for the channel to maintain quality of the content of the television. However, if the vested interests have their way, the channel may not survive for long or it has to bend ways to please vested interests.

If the channel is public limited, channel has always to worry about the bottom line rather than the quality of the content. Even if it is publicly held, vested interests can buy substantial interest and control channel according to their whims and fancies.

The basic question is how channels should conduct themselves and how to provide the quality content even under the pressure of vested interests or persons.

The questions are unresolved and it might take a couple of decades before a pragmatic solution is found.

The End.

why we fight [ 2005 ]

Rating : 03/05

Why We fight ?

For Money, Independence, Corruption, Occupation, Land, Rights, etc... are the words first come to my mind when I have seen the dvd lying on the dusty rack.

The title was so intriguing. I have immediately borrowed it. But when I have started to watch the movie, it is completely a different story.

Directed & written by Eugene Jarecki, this is just another movie about the military-industrial complex foreseen and warned about by Republican Dwight Eisenhower.

What does this movie about ?
America's reasoning to go for war against Iraq. Also provides insights about the past army's propaganda. By this time we all know why America on the behest of the defense corporates gone to war. It shows the views and footage pictures of the past and current presidents, officials, citizens and many more.

So does this movie show anything different ?
The main focus point is military-industrial complex relationship. Of course, no corporate and individual will go against the war if it is creating employment.

Some thoughts after watching the movie :
Corporates and Government have formed complex relationships.
American politicians and Public cannot go/talk against war since they will lose some jobs in their respective area/locality and economic activity too.
The media is in synchronisation with the Government/Politicians propaganda who are looking after their bottom lines and nothing else.
Politicians are clearly benefitting themselves along with the Officials at higher posts.
America's short-term profits will be clearly negated by the long-term backlash in the future.

What citizens are doing ?
Nothing, they are happy as long as they have jobs and money to feed their family even at the cost of other foreign/own citizens.

The End.

man mplayer : general encoding options [ mencoder only ]

man mplayer : general encoding options [ mencoder only ] [ SOURCE ]

-audio-delay <any floating-point number>
Delays either audio or video by setting a delay field in the header ( default : 0.0 ). This does not delay either stream while encoding, but the player will see the delay field and compensate accordingly. Positive values delay the audio, and negative values delay the video. Note that this is the exact opposite of the -delay option. For example, if a video plays correctly with -delay 0.2, you can fix the video with MEncoder by using -audio-delay -0.2.

Currently, this option only works with the default muxer ( -of avi ). If you are using a different muxer, then you must use -delay instead.

-audio-density <1-50>
Number of audio chunks per second ( default is 2 for 0.5s long audio chunks ).
NOTE : CBR only, VBR ignores this as it puts each packet in a new chunk.

-audio-preload <0.0-2.0>
Sets up the audio buffering time interval ( default : 0.5s ).

-fafmttag <format>
Can be used to override the audio format tag of the output file.

EXAMPLE :
-fafmttag 0x55
Will have the output file contain 0x55 ( mp3 ) as audio format tag.

-ffourcc <fourcc>
Can be used to override the video fourcc of the output file.

EXAMPLE :
-ffourcc div3
Will have the output file contain 'div3' as video fourcc.

-force-avi-aspect <0.2-3.0>
Override the aspect stored in the AVI OpenDML vprp header. This can be used to change the aspect ratio with '-ovc copy'.

-frameno-file <filename> (DEPRECATED)
Specify the name of the audio file with framenumber mappings created in the first ( audio only ) pass of a special three pass encoding mode.

NOTE : Using this mode will most likely give you A-V desync. Do not use it. It is kept for backwards compatibility only and will possibly be removed in a future version.

-hr-edl-seek
Use a more precise, but much slower method for skipping areas. Areas marked for skipping are not seeked over, instead all frames are decoded, but only the necessary frames are encoded. This allows starting at non-keyframe boundaries.
NOTE : Not guaranteed to work right with '-ovc copy'.

-info <option1:option2:...> (AVI only)
Specify the info header of the resulting AVI file.

general comments about the work

-noautoexpand
Do not automatically insert the expand filter into the MEncoder filter chain. Useful to control at which point of the filter chain subtitles are rendered when hardcoding subtitles onto a movie.

-noencodedups
Do not attempt to encode duplicate frames in duplicate; always output zero-byte frames to indicate duplicates. Zero-byte frames will be written anyway unless a filter or encoder capable of doing duplicate encoding is loaded. Currently the only such filter is harddup.

-noodml (-of avi only)
Do not write OpenDML index for AVI files >1GB.

-noskip
Do not skip frames.

-o <filename>
Outputs to the given filename. If you want a default output filename, you can put this option in the MEncoder config file.

-oac <codec name>
Encode with the given audio codec ( no default set ).
NOTE : Use -oac help to get a list of available audio codecs.

EXAMPLES :
-oac copy
no encoding, just streamcopy
-oac pcm
Encode to uncompressed PCM.
-oac mp3lame
Encode to MP3 ( using LAME ).
-oac lavc
Encode with a libavcodec codec.

-of <format> (BETA CODE!)
Encode to the specified container format ( default : AVI ).
NOTE : Use -of help to get a list of available container formats.

EXAMPLES :
-of avi
Encode to AVI.
-of mpeg
Encode to MPEG ( also see -mpegopts ).
-of lavf
Encode with libavformat muxers ( also see -lavfopts ).
-of rawvideo
raw video stream ( no muxing - one video stream only )
-of rawaudio
raw audio stream ( no muxing - one audio stream only )

-ofps <fps>
Specify a frames per second ( fps ) value for the output file, which can be different from that of the source material. Must be set for variable fps ( ASF, some MOV ) and progressive ( 30000/1001 fps telecined MPEG ) files.

-ovc <codec name>
Encode with the given video codec ( no default set ).
NOTE : Use -ovc help to get a list of available video codecs.

EXAMPLES :
-ovc copy
no encoding, just streamcopy
-ovc raw
Encode to an arbitrary uncompressed format ( use '-vf format' to select ).
-ovc lavc
Encode with a libavcodec codec.

-passlogfile <filename>
Dump first pass information to <filename> instead of the default divx2pass.log in two pass encoding mode.

-skiplimit <value>
Specify the maximum number of frames that may be skipped after encoding one frame ( -noskiplimit for unlimited ).

-vobsubout <basename>
Specify the basename for the output .idx and .sub files. This turns off subtitle rendering in the encoded movie and diverts it to VOBsub subtitle files.

-vobsuboutid <langid>
Specify the language two letter code for the subtitles. This overrides what is read from the DVD or the .ifo file.

-vobsuboutindex <index>
Specify the index of the subtitles in the output files ( default : 0 ).

The End.

man mplayer : environment variables

man mplayer : environment variables [ SOURCE ]

There are a number of environment variables that can be used to control the behavior of MPlayer and MEncoder.

MPLAYER_CHARSET (also see -msgcharset)
Convert console messages to the specified charset ( default : autodetect ). A value of "noconv" means no conversion.

MPLAYER_HOME
Directory where MPlayer looks for user settings.

MPLAYER_VERBOSE (also see -v and -msglevel)
Set the initial verbosity level across all message modules ( default : 0 ). The resulting verbosity corresponds to that of -msâglevel 5 plus the value of MPLAYER_VERBOSE.

libaf :
LADSPA_PATH
If LADSPA_PATH is set, it searches for the specified file. If it is not set, you must supply a fully specified pathname.
FIXME : This is also mentioned in the ladspa section.

libdvdcss :
DVDCSS_CACHE
Specify a directory in which to store title key values. This will speed up descrambling of DVDs which are in the cache. The DVDCSS_CACHE directory is created if it does not exist, and a subdirectory is created named after the DVD's title or manufacturing date. If DVDCSS_CACHE is not set or is empty, libdvdcss will use the default value which is "${HOME}/.dvdcss/" under Unix and "C:\Documents and Settings\$USER\Application Data\dvdcss\" under Win32. The special value "off" disables caching.

DVDCSS_METHOD
Sets the authentication and decryption method that libdvdcss will use to read scrambled discs. Can be one of title, key or disc.
key
is the default method. libdvdcss will use a set of calculated player keys to try and get the disc key. This can fail if the drive does not recognize any of the player keys.
disc
is a fallback method when key has failed. Instead of using player keys, libdvdcss will crack the disc key using a brute force algorithm. This process is CPU intensive and requires 64 MB of memory to store temporary data.
title
is the fallback when all other methods have failed. It does not rely on a key exchange with the DVD drive, but rather uses a crypto attack to guess the title key. On rare cases this may fail because there is not enough encrypted data on the disc to perform a statistical attack, but in the other hand it is the only way to decrypt a DVD stored on a hard disc, or a DVD with the wrong region on an RPC2 drive.

DVDCSS_RAW_DEVICE
Specify the raw device to use. Exact usage will depend on your operating system, the Linux utility to set up raw devices is raw(8) for instance. Please note that on most operating systems, using a raw device requires highly aligned buffers : Linux requires a 2048 bytes alignment ( which is the size of a DVD sector ).

DVDCSS_VERBOSE
Sets the libdvdcss verbosity level.
0 Outputs no messages at all.
1 Outputs error messages to stderr.
2 Outputs error messages and debug messages to stderr.

DVDREAD_NOKEYS
Skip retrieving all keys on startup. Currently disabled.

AUDIOSERVER
Specifies the Network Audio System server to which the nas audio output driver should connect and the transport that should be used. If unset DISPLAY is used instead. The transport can be one of tcp and unix. Syntax is tcp/<somehost>:<someport>, <somehost>:<instancenumber> or [unix]:<instancenumber>. The NAS base port is 8000 and <instancenumber> is added to that.

EXAMPLES :
AUDIOSERVER=somehost:0
Connect to NAS server on somehost using default port and transport.
AUDIOSERVER=tcp/somehost:8000
Connect to NAS server on somehost listening on TCP port 8000.
AUDIOSERVER=(unix)?:0
Connect to NAS server instance 0 on localhost using unix domain sockets.
